Why do we have more cylinders in an engine?

Refer to previous article on cc.  If we want more power then we have to increase cc of car(keeping everything else same for this analysis). Now it can be done in two ways:

  1. Increase the size of engine cylinder (cc)
  2. Increase the number of cylinders

Out of the two methods, method 1 is economically feasible till a certain threshold after which it becomes essential to go for method 2. The reason being that if we increase the cylinder size, then piston size also increases and it becomes more and more difficult to balance the piston. This leads to more vibrations in the engine and the vehicle. Whereas same engine capacity of X cc can be made as X/4 cc cylinders of four in number.

Experimental engines of upto 24 cylinders have been made though practically most common format is inline 4 for cars and V (twin) for motorcyles.
